MAIN (long term causes of WWI)

Militarism - Glorifying military power
-led to an "arms race" and creation of large "standing" armies. *led to alliances
Alliances - Pledges to defend allies if attacked
- creation of 2 "camps" or sides
- created the possibility that any dispute (fight) between 2 rival countries could pull the entire continent into war
Imperialism - the quest for colonies (empire building)
- competition over colonies ( resources, markets, and land) in Africa and Asia creates rivalries and mistrust
Nationalism - a deep devotion (love and commitment) to one's own nation
- intense competition for industrial dominance and power
- support of leaders who try to increase national power, military, and territory

Why did workers in the late 1800s and early 1900s like the idea of communism as an alternative to capitalism?

STEP 1

Start by describing the working and living conditions of industrial cities that caused frustration.

Working conditions

Agricultural Revolution Brochure

You are an Entrepreneur. Create a brochure for a tour company in Britain during the Agricultural Revolution. Your assignment is to advertise what customers will see on your tour. Below is a list of terms/attractions that you must include.

Enclosures – describe in your newsletter what an enclosure is, what new types of farming are happening on them (crop rotation, seed drills, reapers, etc.), warn your customers not to feed the begging tenant farmers looking for food and work.

Factories and new machines – On your tour you stop at a textile factory and your customers will have a chance to see how one operates. Explain what Britain’s factories power sources are, describe a few of the machines that they will see.

Transportation – This is the first time any of your customers have been on a train. Explain to them that it is safe. Be sure to describe the other new forms of transportation they will see on your tour (steam boat, wagons using a Macadam’s road, and of course the railroad).

You will need to come up with a name for your company. Your brochure needs to be attractive because you are competing against the other tour companies in the room.

Napoleon Campaign Poster

Read the sections "Napoleon Seizes Power" and "Napoleon Seizes France" at the beginning of section 3 of chapter 7. Take notes the things that Napoleon did to become leader and what he did to make France stronger once he was in power.

Your Assignment is to create a campaign poster for Napoleon. Pretend you are on Napoleon's election staff and your job is to convince the French people to "re-elect" him. The theme of your poster should be Napoleon's greatness as a leader (militarily or otherwise) and what he has already done to improve France. You must include/mention the following in your poster:

1. Defending the National Convention against the Royalists
2. Military victories against European Monarchies
3. Coup d'etat (French people lost faith in the Directory)
4. Plebiscite (the French people have already shown their support)
5. Has achieved the goals of the Revolution of 1789
a. tax reform (relief for the 3rd estate) and banking system
b. creation of Lycees (schools) to train government officials and open positions of law
making to people of all classes.
c. ended corruption in government
d. Signing the "Concordat" which recognized church sovereignty
e. Napoleonic codes

Your poster needs to be attractive to voters visually. Remember you are trying to convince/remind the people how great Napoleon is.
